A Little Something for Everyone

Por Mariel Fiori
August 2025
Here’s a quick survey, a mini-test. Were you born in Central America, live in the Hudson Valley, and are looking for community, spiritual support, or basic services? Do you have an irregular immigration status, or are you an ally or advocate for immigrants’ rights? Do you live in Newburgh or nearby areas and has your family been affected by drinking water contamination? Are you a low-income Latino person disproportionately impacted by environmental injustices?

Are you interested in accessible science, health, the environment, and civil rights? Are you a middle-aged Hispanic woman going through menopause? Or are you a health professional working with Latina women? Are you interested in women’s empowerment and mental health?

Do you enjoy Latin American poetry, art, and literature? Are you an immigrant reflecting on identity, belonging, and creativity? Do you enjoy travel chronicles or human stories with a touch of humor? Are you a woman between 30 and 65 years old with a college education? Or on the contrary, are you a young adult between 20 and 40, first or second generation, and a digital media consumer?

Are you a parent looking to improve your family’s emotional dynamics? Are you interested in applied neuroscience, positive psychology, and family well-being? Are you an adult between 25 and 70 years old, with low or middle income, concerned about mental health, household economy, and access to services in Spanish? Do you speak Spanish and face language barriers in the United States? Or are you a language professional, student, or teacher interested in social justice, civil rights, and linguistic equity?

If you answered yes to one or more of the questions above, then the result of this “test” is very positive. You are in the right place: the August issue of La Voz! In this issue, we truly have a little bit of everything for everyone.

In our Usos y costumbres section, I share the perspectives of three language justice advocates in the Hudson Valley. By law, we all have the right to receive government information—including about legal, health, and education issues—in the language we understand.

In the Vida saludable section, Ivette O’Sullivan, Menopause Coaching Specialist (GGS), writes about “menopausal brain fog” and reviews key strategies for natural and holistic self-care and mental health.

In the Sueño americano section, a space where we share the profile of an immigrant achieving their version of the so-called American Dream, Bard College student and La Voz writer Andrés Pérez Rangel interviews Reverend Rigoberto Ávila-Nativi of the Church of the Good Shepherd in Newburgh, who says, “Migrating is not a crime, it is an act of survival.”
In the Actualidad section, thanks to a collaboration with Science Friday, a digital platform of fun and educational science and technology articles and podcasts, journalist Shantal Riley explains why Newburgh is paying the price of PFAS in its drinking water.

Professor Camilo Rojas interviews, for his column Nuestros artistas, bilingual Argentine poet and Beacon resident Celia Reissig. In the Recuerdos de… section, La Voz general coordinator Nohan Meza writes with a touch of humor about the time he had to recover his passport while trying to leave Jamaica.

In her column El poder del amor, holistic psychologist Dora Inés Grosso García talks about family practices to cultivate emotional intelligence, from the perspective of neuroscience and holistic psychology.

Elisvanell Celis, Bard student and the newest member of the La Voz team, writes for the Recurso section about gambling addiction, an invisible addiction that affects nearly a million people in New York State.

And of course, there’s also a bit of everything and something for everyone in our monthly Resource Guide. Is there any other topic you’d like to see in a future issue of La Voz? Send me a message at [email protected], and let your voice be heard!

And with that, we wrap up this editorial introducing La Voz’s August issue.

Come on in and read!
