Expressive techniques through art and play
Powerful tools to work with the inner child
Por Dora Inés Grosso García
December 2024These practical and simple techniques allow us to express emotions and memories non-verbally, releasing what often cannot be articulated with words, to foster love, creativity, spontaneity and connection with the most authentic part of ourselves.
Drawing: Draw a girl or boy, naturally, not a caricature, use white paper and pencil. Let it flow without worrying about the artistic technique. Reflect on what emerges: How does he or she look, happy, sad, or how is he or she? What do you feel when you see his or her image? What emotion does it convey? Allow yourself to connect with your emotions and visually represent what you may not be able to put into words. You can share it with your family members and have them tell you how they see that boy or girl and what they would say to him or her. This way you can evaluate part of yourself. Then simply put your hands on your heart and speak to your inner self telling it how much you love him or her and accept him or her as he or she is with your unconditional affection.
Emotional collage: Cut out images, words or phrases from magazines that resonate with your childhood emotions or experiences. Combine everything on a poster board creatively, expressing what you felt when you were a child and what you still feel as if you are living it. This exercise helps to explore memories and emotions intuitively, bringing forgotten or repressed aspects to light. At the end of the exercise, recognize that you are special and that what you have experienced can be useful if it is rewarding. If not, hug your child and release that pain with love, tell him or her that you are here for him or her and give him or her all your understanding; today you are here as an adult to heal and give him or her the best.
Symbolic play: Recover toys or activities that you enjoyed as a child, such as stuffed animals, dolls, cars, board games, among others, and play freely, allowing yourself to feel joy, curiosity, or nostalgia. It rekindles positive emotions associated with childhood and offers a way to reconnect with lost spontaneity. When you allow yourself to play what your inner self liked, you bring its true essence to you and discover who you really are.
Dance or free movement: Listen to music that reminds you of moments from your childhood, it can be happy, relaxing or melancholic and let your body move intuitively. Release emotional tensions stored in the body and reconnect with the feeling of freedom and spontaneous expression. It allows us to connect with the true being that we are, joyful, spontaneous, loving, happy and capable of changing, making mistakes and learning from our mistakes.
Thank you for continuing to express and experience love.
