December 2024The Society of the Snow is an adventure drama produced by Netflix and directed by J.A. Bayona based on the book The Snow Society by Pablo Vierci. Bayona portrays this adventure drama as a new perspective on human resilience after a tragedy. The film is about an air accident of a Uruguayan Armed Forces plane that crashed in the Chilean Andes in 1972 transporting a rugby team to Chile. This caused the 29 survivors of the 45 passengers to look for a way to survive in an environment they were not used to and without the necessary resources.
The Society of the Snow, released in 2023 at the Venice Film Festival, received positive reviews, was nominated for a Golden Globe, won 12 awards, including best film and best director at the 38th Goya Awards, and was nominated for best international film, representing Spain at the 2024 Oscars. Director J.A. Bayona's performance and different ways of demonstrating the cinematic world as a form of personal expression made this success possible. One of the main focuses of this project by Bayona was to show the importance of teamwork instead of individualism. In addition, this film leads us to reflect on our inner strength as human beings, how we act in times of tragedy, and how negativity is not essential in our lives to overcome any obstacle.
This film helps us change the way we think and teaches us about the importance of leadership and teamwork to move forward.
Another emotional project by J.A. Bayona is the film The Impossible which can also be found on Netflix. The film is about what seemed like an ordinary family trip in Thailand, which ended up being probably the worst trip of their lives when a huge and terrifying mountain of water rose from the sea, sweeping away everything that crossed its path. This phenomenon caused the family of four to be separated for hours of tragedy. The film continues with the four of them on different paths without knowing about the status of the other members, trying to survive in the midst of strong currents of water while also looking for family reunion.
The Impossible was released in 2012 after the Spanish filmmaker, Bayona, heard the story of María Belón, who was surprised by the Tsunami while she was vacationing with her family on December 26, 2004 in Thailand. This made a great impression on Bayona who felt the need to tell the exciting story of María. With this approach, Bayona wanted to show the public the same thing he felt. For this reason, the film Lo Imposible, shows us the value that people must have to connect with people, to build social relationships in order to create a community of trust where we can depend on and support each other regardless of the circumstances with the rest of humanity.
The end of the film leads us to the conclusion that at the end of tragedy there is a happy ending when there is a strong chain of moral support in times of uncertainty.
