Solidarity, the best gift of humanity
Por Olga Maritza Salazar
December 2024“Those who are happiest are those who do the most for others.” --Booker T. Washington.
In recent years we have seen how climate change, natural disasters and wars have affected the lives of many populations, resulting in a large number of homeless people in need of empathy and charity from others.
In many of these cases, states have not responded adequately to offer the necessary assistance to their citizens, and this is when many people, alone or with their community, organize themselves to provide support to the victims.
Filled with a sense of solidarity and a desire to serve others, these citizens prepare themselves with whatever might be useful to them and go out to rescue other people, care for those affected and even search for people who have disappeared during catastrophes.
We see very moving situations, where we realize that material things don't matter, that we have often wasted hours or days of our lives after a dream of progress and comfort, and that it only takes a few minutes for everything to disappear. The mere presence and love of our family is what really matters.
Through the news we have been part of tender stories of rescue and support full of solidarity, such as the case of the Martinez family in Cedar Key where a hurricane hit the Gulf Coast of Florida. This family, made up of the parents and their two minor children, decided to evacuate their home when they saw that the water level was rising rapidly, but they realized that their neighbors, an elderly couple, could not leave their home due to their physical limitations.
The Martinez decided to help them. While Mr. Martinez carried the elderly neighbor on his back, Mrs. Martinez guided the elderly woman, protecting her from some of the falling debris. Meanwhile, the Martinez children, ages 8 and 10, walked hand in hand, supporting each other.
After an arduous journey in torrential rain, they all managed to reach the shelter of a church in the village. Their story spread and their community considered them heroes for their noble action.
In Valencia (Spain), two rivers overflowed their banks due to heavy rains, causing a major flood, affecting almost all of the city's inhabitants. The feeling of compassion that arose in the local people was immediate.
The help went viral. Thousands of people from other cities, and even from other countries, mobilized to help them, showing the world a great example of solidarity, leadership and self-organization.
Stories like these inspire communities to continue to be supportive, to reflect on the true meaning of love and generosity, especially during the holiday season, when many families are more willing to help others.
At this time, it is as if our spirit is truly touched, as we do not only think about celebrating the holidays, but the desire to help others manifests itself in a massive way. Many charitable activities are organized in the community, reflecting the collective effort put into supporting the vulnerable and strengthening the sense of humanity in an environment of empathy.
