October 2021
With the intent to celebrate the Hispanic Heritage Month and the contribution of Latinx artists to this country, renowned art makers Wilfredo Morel and Néstor Madalengoitia were invited to curate the show called “Esperanza: heritage and hope”. This exhibition was initiated and coordinated by the Spanish Speaking Library Assistant, Elva Margarita Corbaton.
The show is taking place at the Poughkeepsie Public Library "Adriance Memorial" from September 15 to October 15, 2021, at The Rotunda, Library Gallery, 93 Market Street, Poughkeepsie, NY 12601. The Rotunda gallery is located on the Main Floor of the public library with direct access from Market Street.

“At the Poughkeepsie Public Library, our desire is to open new worlds to our readers. This exhibition is a wonderful reflection of what the world of Latin Art is. In addition, we want our Latino community to see their culture represented in the hope that it will be an inspiration to future generations of Latino artis," said Elva Margarita Corbaton.

Showing magnificent works of art to the community, the Latinx artists from the Hudson Valley who are participating are: José Acosta, Pablo Alberro, Salvador Arellano, Thamara Carias Alvarado, José González-Soto, María Fernanda Hubeaut, Kesha Ocasio, Julia Santos Solomon and the writer of this note, Elisa Pritzker.

On its website, the Hispanic Council explains Hispanic Heritage Month: “Every year since 1988, the United States celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month from September 15 to October 15 to recognize the history, traditions and contribution to the American society and culture of Hispanic communities, as well as its important presence in the population of the country today. The history of this annual celebration begins in 1968 with the passage of Public Law 90-498. The then President Lyndon Johnson dictated that the week of September 15 or 16 of each year, Hispanic Heritage Week would be celebrated to recognize the culture, history, and traditions of the Latino community. The choice of this date was not something accidental. On September 15, the independence of five Central American countries is commemorated: Costa Rica, Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras and Nicaragua; on the 16th in Mexico and on the 18th in Chile. Twenty years later, under the presidency of Ronald Reagan, the Week became Hispanic Heritage Month and was set between September 15 and October 15 to include October 12, Hispanic Day and the festive Columbus Day of the United States”. hispaniccouncil.org

The exhibition is open to the general public for free until October 15, 2021, and can be visited within the library's regular service hours.
