La Voz invites you to a movie night
Simón, a Venezuelan story
Por Andrés Pérez Rangel
December 2024La Voz Club invites you to Movie Night: A Venezuelan Story, an evening featuring the screening of the film Simón on Sunday, December 15, at 7:00 PM in the Weis Cinema at Bard College. Admission is free, and snacks and treats will be provided.
Simón is a drama directed by Diego Vicentini, inspired by the lives of young Venezuelans who have been victims of political repression. The film tells the story of Simón, an opposition leader who, after being persecuted in his country, seeks political asylum in the United States. Starring Christian McGaffney, Luis Silva, and Jana Nawartschi, the plot blends fiction and reality to create empathy for those who fight for democracy.
Released in 2023, the film has received widespread international recognition: it won the Grand Prize at the Heartland International Film Festival and was nominated for Best Ibero-American Film at the Goya Awards. Its international reach, with dialogues in English and Spanish, also elevates Latin voices in the film industry. Simón not only highlights Venezuela’s challenges but serves as a universal reminder of the meaning of resistance and sacrifice for ideals.
The film sheds light on stories of resistance in contexts of oppression faced by Venezuelans, increasingly present in the Hudson Valley.
