The Grupo Folclórico de Poughkeepsie and the Poughkeepsie Guelaguetza Organizing Committee (composed of local non-profit organizations and community members) are pleased to announce the 15th Annual Poughkeepsie Guelaguetza Festival 2022, Sunday, August 14, 1 to 7pm at Waryas Park, facing the Hudson River. Rain or shine.
After 2 years of pandemic and waiting for the safe reopening for residents and visitors alike, the Grupo Folclórico de Poughkeepsie along with the organizing committee are preparing the 15th Poughkeepsie La Guelaguetza Festival, a free event for the whole family. Guelaguetza is a word from the indigenous Zapotec language that means sharing, and that is the spirit of the festival where more than 100 artists, dancers, musicians, and singers present the culture and traditions of the eight regions of Oaxaca, Mexico, highlighting the typical dances, the music of the towns, the flavors, and the majestic colors of Oaxaca represented in their costumes.

There will be dances with live music, with: Grupo Folclórico de Poughkeepsie, New York Folkloric Ballet, Triquis Without Borders, Guadalupano Folkloric Ballet, Costa Oaxaca Folkloric Group, Natashuy Day House, Banda Azul de Oaxaca, the singers Selines, Alberto Ojeda, Mariano Cerza and Araceli Mendoza. There will also be food and crafts for sale from restaurants and shops from the region, free children’s activities tent, and information from local nonprofits.

The Poughkeepsie shore of the Hudson River has been the home to La Guelaguetza since 2008. This most important of festivals for the Oaxacan community is an opportunity to spend time with friends and neighbors regardless of race, color, language, gender identity, or nationality. A moment for all to enjoy the culture, traditions, music, dance, food, and identity of the native peoples of Oaxaca.

This Guelaguetza will be offered in tribute to all the victims of COVID-19, focusing on health and family. We hope all visitors will attend responsibly; if you have symptoms of COVID-19, please stay home. Alcohol consumption is not allowed.

The organizing committee for La Guelaguetza de Poughkeepsie 2022 is made up of Casa Comunitaria de Recursos, Hudson Valley Patriots for Immigration Reform, La Voz, Poughkeepsie Public Library, Revolución Radio, and Sun River Health, with fiscal sponsorship by the Pathfinder Foundation.
