Do you speak Mexican? ¿Habla usted mexicano?

November 2012 ‘Hell yeah, precisely’ is what I attempted to say at first instead of having to explain to the poor girl about how Mexico, much like every other Latin American country speaks Spanish not Latin not Argentinian or Cuban or Dominican. ‘We speak Spanish’ is what I said to her, and the look on her face was one of shock, as if I had asked her to donate both her kidneys and something.“¡Claro que si wey!” es lo primero que iba decir cuando una chica me preguntó si hablo “mexicano”. Pensé que era una broma pero sus ojos estaban llenos de curiosidad. Le expliqué a la pobre que en México, al igual que en todos los países de América Latina hablamos español, no se habla argentino o cubano o dominicano, solo español. “Se habla español”, le dije y la expresión de su rostro era de shock, como si le hubiera pedido que donara sus dos riñones.
It is understandable that not every person I meet is a geography or language professor but I never thought that someone would ask me this question. Maybe she was talking about dialects, because let’s face it, every country has a complete different way of saying the same thing, ‘no mames’ in Mexico is said ‘estoy bromeando’ in another place, but dialects are not languages.
I still get asked this question, and I try to decipher the tone to see if it’s a joke or not, to my dismay, most of the time it isn’t. But we all just have to live with the fact that not everyone would know this even if it makes no sense to us.
Maybe it was just simply curiosity but it made me question our knowledge. How is it possible that people so educated know so little about other cultures, even me, for example? I am knowledgeable about some things but that’s because it is what I’m interested in. However, I realize that I can’t blame the girl, because there are tons of things about different countries that I am clueless about; the world runs on what the media shows us. The only thing we can do is search and become more knowledgeable, and if someone asks us, then we help him or her to learn and spread the knowledge.
¿Habla usted mexicano?
Es comprensible que no toda la gente que me encuentro sean profesores de geografía o idiomas, pero nunca pensé que alguien me haría esta pregunta. Tal vez ella se refería a dialectos porque cada país tiene una manera diferente de referirse a lo mismo, “no mames” en México se dice “estoy bromeando” en otro lugar, pero los dialectos no son idiomas.
Todavía me hacen esta pregunta y yo trato de descifrar el tono para ver si es una broma o no, para mi consternación, normalmente no lo es. Pero todos tendremos que acostumbrarnos al hecho de que no todo el mundo lo sabe, aunque no tenga ningún sentido para nosotros.
Quizás era simple curiosidad pero me hizo cuestionar nuestro conocimiento. ¿Cómo es posible que gente educada sepa tan poco sobre otras culturas, incluyéndome a mí, por ejemplo? Estoy bien informada sobre algunos temas porque son los que me interesan. Sin embargo, me doy cuenta que no puedo culpar a la chica, porque hay miles de cosas sobre diferentes países de las que no tengo idea; el mundo funciona según lo que los medios de comunicación nos muestran. Lo único que podemos hacer es averiguar y volvernos más informados, y si alguien nos pregunta, entonces lo ayudamos a aprender y a difundir el conocimiento.
