PAST SIMPLE: Regular Verbs (Part 1)

EL PASADO SIMPLE: Verbos regulares (Parte 1)

Por Estela González Torres
February 2015

We use the Past Simple to talk about:

  • An event that happened at a particular time in the past:

The party was yesterday at 9 pm.

  • Something that continued for some time in the past:

We traveled across America for a month.

  • Something that happened several times in the past:

We went to the park every weekend.

For regular verbs, just add -edPlay > played.

There are some exceptions in spelling when adding -ed:

  • After a final e, only add dLove > loved.
  • With a final consonant after a short, stressed vowel; double the consonant:Admit > admitted.
  • A final y after a consonant becomes i:Hurry > hurried.
